Title: Vice President of Development

Reports to: President/CEO

Children International, a $145 million international humanitarian organization, is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as Vice President of Development.

In this influential leadership position, you will discover that we address global poverty at the root cause level by working directly with children and youth around the world. We believe that kids are the single best answer to breaking the cycle of poverty — especially generational poverty.

Our approach is far more than poverty alleviation. It is about poverty eradication. We focus on developing and delivering programs based on four pillars: health, education, empowerment and employment. This holistic approach is delivered in community centers around the world by an amazing team.

Today, Children International directly helps more than 285,000 children in 10 countries. Our transformational work is accomplished through 1,500 mission-driven employees and nearly 8,000 volunteers globally. The person we are seeking as Vice President of Development will develop impactful donor strategies so that we can deliver on our goal of actively serving 1 million kids by 2025 with programs and services that truly change their stories for the better.

The work Children International does on behalf of children in poverty is funded primarily through a one-to-one sponsorship model, with nearly 200,000 sponsors. With the impactful relationships this model fosters, sponsors have the privilege of transforming the lives of the children and youth they support. Along the way, sponsors’ lives are also transformed.

Children International is proud of its history of financial accountability, with 90 percent of the organization’s total expenses going directly toward programs. Services provided to sponsored children and their families through sponsor donations include medical and dental care, nutritional support, educational assistance, clothing, material aids, transformational youth empowerment programs and employment/vocational training programs.

After more than 80 years of a consistent funding model, Children International is on the precipice of change. To support the
plan for future growth, the model is evolving beyond sponsorship. Bringing that change demands a skilled leader,
a fanatical collaborator, a change warrior, a passionate advocate for children and an ethical owner of our cause. The Vice President of Development will be a critical player in leading through this new era of growth and transformation.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Development will be responsible for crafting the strategic direction for Development and providing strong leadership for the implementation of donor-development initiatives, managing a team of results-oriented staff and being a careful steward of donors and their contributions. S/he must deliver a donor program that provides both new and existing donors with an exceptional experience with the organization that earns their loyalty and personal advocacy.

We’re looking for an individual who has the personality and skills to strengthen relationships with existing donors, and an innovative nature to reach out in new and compelling ways to develop new donor funding streams.

Serving as the chief development officer, the Vice President of Development will lead and oversee all fundraising activities with individuals, the foundation and corporate giving areas.

Specific responsibilities:
  • Developing a strategic plan for selecting, educating and engaging target donors that is consistent with Children International’s brand positioning, and in the context an eventual formal, campaign around CI’s future goals for serving 1 million children
  • Developing and leading a tactical plan that enables Children International to achieve both near-term and long-term financial objectives, through collaboration with cross-functional work teams
  • Developing, leading and managing a high-performing and empowered donor development team
  • Serve as the chief fundraiser for the organization, and managing a personal portfolio of principal/major donors and foundations in partnership with the president/CEO of CI
  • Collaborating with other functional areas to provide donors and prospective donors with an extraordinary experience with Children International
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of Children International’s development initiatives, including results, reporting, budgets, communications and multiple initiatives supporting revenue generation and the donor experience
  • Continually upgrade fundraising practices and infrastructure to best practices nationally and ensure successful adherence to grant and restricted giving agreements
  • U.S./international travel (approximately 50%) is necessary in order to effectively perform the duties of this position. Must be willing to travel to Kansas City periodically. Travel to KC would be heavier in the first 6 months if not relocating.

This job is critical to the future of Children International. It promises to be challenging, but it will be worth it. You’ll see it in the eyes of the teens who graduate from our program and in the gratitude of donors.

Required experience/qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree is required, with an advanced degree preferred
  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience in development, including a proven track record in transforming an organization’s outcomes
  • Experience researching, identifying, nurturing and engaging external partners that align with the organization’s objectives is necessary. A broad-based development background encompassing foundation and corporate grants; major gifts; capital and/or comprehensive campaigns; planned giving; and annual funds from global/national sources is important.
  • Experience managing consultants dealing with campaign development is strongly preferred
  • Must possess a demonstrated record of personal success in raising significant gifts (i.e., successful six-/seven-figure asks) from individuals, businesses, foundations, corporations and/or the public sector
  • Experience leveraging fundraising databases and support systems for prospect research and management is required
  • Leadership background should include proven ability to manage, motivate and empower a diverse internal team and external consultants, and in coordinating and supporting the fundraising activities of others. If not relocating to Kansas City, candidates must have experience managing remotely located gift officers and also experience managing backend development operations remotely.
  • Given the nature of the position, it will be helpful for candidates to have had international travel experience and exposure to developing countries. Bilingual in Spanish/English is a tremendous advantage in the role.
Personal characteristics:
  • Must have exceptional leadership capabilities — including intelligence, vision, humility and energy/drive — with the ability to serve as an inspiring leader who can develop and empower diverse teams and be the chief fundraising officer
  • Excellent interpersonal, relational and communication skills, with a history of inspiring phenomenal collaboration across various functions
  • Must be a well-rounded and entrepreneurial business leader
  • Must display a solid business acumen (e.g., a “quick study” and high capacity to learn with an outside-the-box mentality) that relies on good judgment and sound analysis
  • Relentlessly results-oriented with demonstrated ability to achieve strategic objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve outcomes within established resources and work effectively in a flat organization
  • A skilled negotiator with the flexibility and creativity needed to find alternative ways to reach funding objectives when barriers arise
  • Dedicated to diversity — interested in and compassion for international cultures with respect for a wide range of faiths, beliefs, experiences and ethnically diverse populations
  • Effective in managing multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Accepts and fosters a positive outlook toward change
  • Exhibits the highest standards of honesty and integrity reflective of a senior leader within an outstanding organization
  • Must possess a passion for children and youth and committed to making a difference in the world.
