Inspire youth to achieve their goals

write a letter to INTO EMPLOYMENT GRADUATES

Youth writing letters

Many of the children in our programs have worked hard, had fun and acquired important skills in the first two decades of their lives, thanks to the support provided by Children International, partners and global teams. For youth who recently graduated from our capstone initiative, Into Employment®, it’s an exciting time of transition and potential as they enter young adulthood.

These youth have either climbed the first rung of their career path or are currently seeking their first formal employment opportunity. They’ve graduated from vocational/technical institutes or university, in many industries, ranging from hospitality, health care, STEM and more. But change – even positive change – can be stressful. A wide-open future is also full of unknowns.

Writing letters to these young people, encouraging them to continue their path away from generational poverty, can provide a positive, motivational boost. And if you can please offer any advice you have from your own experiences with interviewing for jobs, this would be especially appreciated. Exposing youth to a more global perspective and knowing that someone is cheering them on can have a big impact on their self-confidence. And we’re incredibly thankful you have chosen to be that “someone”!

As you compose your letter, do not address it to a specific person and please sign the letter using only your first name. This helps protect your privacy and is a part of our larger child safeguarding policy, which prioritizes ensuring the safety and well-being of the children and youth in our care.

Not sure what to write?

Use positive, simple language. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Offer congratulations on graduating
  • Encourage them to keep believing in themselves and their capabilities
  • Celebrate their hard work - and how they are a positive force in their families and communities
  • Perhaps mention your first job out of high school or college - and add a few details about your current role or department - this helps broaden their knowledge of the many types of career opportunities that exist.

You can even offer helpful suggestions about one of their big next steps: The interview process. Provide tips from your own experiences, and/or share some of these ideas:

  • Dress the part: Even if the job is more casual, try to look polished and professional
  • Practice like it’s the real deal: Run through mock interviews, even if you rehearsed in your coursework. By practicing with a friend, family member or in front of a mirror, rehearsing answers to common questions helps refine communication skills
  • Know the company, know yourself: Learn a few key facts about the company and be ready to explain why you’re excited to work there. Also, reflect on your own strengths and experiences – conveying a sense of authenticity goes a long way!
