Honduras is a beautiful country with a history of hardship – which makes sponsorship that much more important. With a population of 8.2 million people, Honduras remains one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Just over half of the population lives below the poverty line, and unemployment hovers near 30 %, even as many international businesses continue to open manufacturing plants in the ever-expanding city of San Pedro Sula.

OUR WORK IN HONDURAS

San Pedro Sula

We’ve been delivering sponsorship assistance to children in Honduras since 1984, so our presence is widely recognized in the communities we serve. The majority of urban families we help live in cramped homes made from either cinder blocks or scraps of wood, tin and plastic sheeting; while their rural counterparts often occupy homes built from wood or wattle, a combination of mud and sticks used to create walls. Regardless of where they live, many impoverished families lack basic services like clean running water, electricity and sanitation services.

HARD TRUTHS

  • Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Central America: 60% of its population lives below the poverty line.

  • Up to 75% of our sponsored children and their families use outdoor latrines or open fields for their sanitation needs.

  • Less than half of Honduran children complete more than three years of education.

  • Nearly 12% of our sponsored families in Honduras live on less than $2 a day.

CHALLENGES

Honduras is extremely susceptible to damaging hurricanes and floods along its Caribbean coast. It is also prone to violence from drug trafficking and gangs. These problems, coupled with rampant unemployment, means Honduran children are in constant danger. With Children International’s help, though, kids in Honduras can acquire the skills they need to escape their difficult surroundings and leave poverty behind.

Solutions

  • Over 20,000 poor children and youth in Honduras are sponsored through CI.

  • Sponsored children and youth receive vital assistance like free medical and dental care, nutritional support, educational assistance, family aid, clothing, school supplies and uniforms, shoes and more.

  • Six community centers with playgrounds, learning centers, medical and dental offices and more, support children and give them hope.

  • Over 150,000 annual anti-parasite treatments are provided to Honduran children and their families.

  • Through sponsorship, there are many opportunities for youth to develop leadership abilities and job skills, learn about finances, give back to their communities and participate in organized sports.
