Where Are They Now? CI Dream Makers Continue Building Bright Futures

The CI Dream Makers - Six Children International participants from Guayaquil, Ecuador, who visited Kansas City, Missouri in May 2024

As Ecuador takes the field in Kansas City during the 2026 World Cup, six young people from Children International’s Guayaquil program are reflecting on a special connection to both their country's team and the city where Children International is headquartered.

Two years ago, these same youth traveled to Kansas City for a life-changing experience that broadened their horizons and strengthened their confidence.

After winning a national STEAM-related competition in Ecuador with support from Children International staff and volunteers, they earned spots in Destination Imagination, a global version of that event, which brought 10,000 students together in Kansas City in May 2024. With support from Children International, the six youth traveled to the United States for the first time to represent Ecuador on the world stage.

Not only was the trip their first international journey, it also was their first opportunity to travel beyond their local community.

“At Children International, we know that helping children and youth forge a path out of poverty requires more than meeting immediate needs,” says Susana Eshleman, president and CEO of Children International. “It means providing access to opportunities that build confidence, strengthen skills and expand horizons. For these six young people, the trip to Kansas City did just that – showing them what is possible when talent is matched with opportunity.”
