Sponsored child skating
The sport of speedskating: Sponsored 10‑year‑old Samuel (in front), showed so much passion and potential as a young speedskater that he earned a scholarship that’s helping fund his gear and travel expenses. He’s now proudly part of a team representing his home province in Ecuador.

A Dominican delight: Robelina — a volunteer mom and mother of three children — is seen here with her youngest, 3‑year‑old Elian. She is shopping for the ingredients to make arepa, a densely textured dessert made with unleavened cornmeal and coconut. “Adding raisins,” says Robelina, “provides an unmatched flavor and texture.”

The pedagogy of happiness: The smiles of sponsored 6-year-old Lillian (front) and her classmates in Lusaka are beautiful signs of the joy children experience when they have access to education with caring, committed teachers.

(Re)modeling for fun: Inside a newly remodeled play area at one of our Dominican Republic community centers, a young boy poses beside a recently added mural. Led by our Youth Council, this remodeling project also gives kids the opportunity to “make it their own” playground by adding colorful, uplifting images.

children participate in programing
Community classrooms: In communities that are farther out from our centers, staff take our programs into sponsored children’s neighborhoods. “The most rewarding aspect of delivering our programs,” says Lesly, a program facilitator, “has been creating a connection with the children and helping them find a different way to see the world through life skills.”

Facilitating for the future: Sara L. (back row, third from right) is a mother of three and a volunteer facilitator in Guatemala. Here, she is seen with the children and mothers who gather in the community every Monday for courses on topics ranging from nutrition to early education and skill-building. “For me,” says Sara, “children are a great joy.”

children play games in the Philippines
Learning to play and playing to learn: Learning about teamwork. Playing by the rules. Looking out for others. The importance of exercise. When children learn to play games in group settings, they get to have fun while developing important skills. In the Philippines, staff and volunteers recently joined children and mothers to enjoy a morning of larong pinoy, or traditional Filipino games, in their Manila community.

Freedom celebrations and flying flags: Eight Latin American nations are celebrating their independence days in the month of September, including Mexico (Sept 16th), Guatemala and Honduras (both on the 15th). Honoring ancestors: As people of all ages in the U.S. gear up for Halloween at the end of October, preparations are also underway for Day of the Dead festivals. Celebrated on November 1st & 2nd, this is an official public holiday in Mexico, resulting in two days of festivities and honoring loved ones for Mexicans, including our sponsored children and youth.
