Moving forward

putting down the phone and PICKING UP NEW SKILLS

During the pandemic, children and youth were left with few connections to the world around them, leading to increased risks of digital addiction. As Maria Isabel of Colombia became more isolated, unable to go to school, hang with friends or practice in-line skating, she turned to the family cell phone more and more, developing a digital addiction. Soon, she was unable to stop.

Lower income families like Maria Isabel’s often can’t afford internet service and use cheap “pay as you go” data plans. But having a phone is crucial for them — providing access to vital information, digital banking and job opportunities that were previously unavailable. Learn more about how digital technology benefits our families.

Maria Isabel’s mother appealed to Children International to help with her daughter’s addiction. Our staff helped her see that she could use her time and talents for something more rewarding. Soon, Maria Isabel put away the phone and picked up a clarinet — to play in our Colombia Wind Orchestra!
