Children living in the neglected communities of Mexico where we operate struggle to access the resources and opportunities they need to overcome their difficult circumstances. Although the nation has made recent progress in reducing child and adolescent poverty — a reduction of roughly 15% between 2020 and 2024* — children continue to be disproportionately impacted by poverty.
Young people in Mexico from disadvantaged households often lack access to adequate education, health and other vital resources they need to forge a better future for themselves. Our health education programs, for example, help youth and caregivers learn and develop healthier habits. With a child obesity/overweight rate of nearly 40%*, gaining knowledge about proper nutrition — in tandem with access to health care and safe spaces where they can play and exercise — is helping individuals and communities in Mexico to lead healthier lives.
Unequal access to vital services and other opportunities exacerbate the effects of poverty. Without the interventions made possible through sponsorship, underprivileged Mexican children stand very little chance of reaching their full potential.
