Children growing up in impoverished households in the Dominican Republic face numerous challenges in their efforts to escape generational poverty. Despite recent trends of economic growth and a dip in child poverty rates, more than one-in-four rural Dominican children still experience the effects of daily poverty.*
Another challenge that has seen dramatic improvement — while remaining stubbornly high — is the teen pregnancy rate. Since peaking in the 1990’s, teen birth rates in the Dominican Republic have dropped 75% but are still almost double that of the U.S. rate, with 20% of Dominican girls under 18 having given birth*.
Within this island nation’s marginalized communities, unequal access to health, health education, learning opportunities and resources, as well as other vital services, exacerbate and compound the effects of poverty. Absent the interventions made possible through sponsorship, underprivileged Dominican children stand very little chance of reaching their full potential.
