Kansas City, MO (November 6, 2017) Children International is pleased to announce that all #GivingTuesday donations will be matched up to $1 million, thanks to the support of a generous anonymous donor. The nonprofit organization is raising money for scholarships to help children and youth complete secondary school, vocational training or university.

#GivingTuesday is a day of giving celebrated each year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, a time when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

For #GivingTuesday this year, Children International is raising money for their HOPE Scholarship program (Helping Overcome Poverty through Education). HOPE scholarships provide financial assistance to youth living in poverty, empowering them to pursue higher education and break the cycle of poverty. HOPE scholars use their funds for a variety of education-related needs, including tuition, uniforms, books and transportation costs.

HOPE scholarships make a big difference for these teens. Lesly, a HOPE scholar from Guatemala, said, “When I got the news that I had won the scholarship, it was a very happy day for me and my family! The scholarship has been vital for me. Without this support, I could not finish my education and aspire to a better future.”

Being able to pursue higher education is important for breaking the cycle of poverty, which is why education is one of Children International’s key program areas. In addition to providing scholarships, Children International provides tutoring, computer labs and libraries to help children and teens complete their schooling.

President and CEO of Children International Susana Eshleman said, “We know how critical education is when it comes to helping our kids overcome poverty. In fact, we know that for every additional year of education a worker achieves, his or her income increases 8.3%. With this #GivingTuesday match, we are thrilled that we will be able to provide even more kids with scholarships to help them complete their education and make their dreams a reality.”
