GENDER EQUITY: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

12 million girls
(under 18) get married every year*

Our education, life-skills and empowerment programs give girls alternate paths to independence.

nearly 1 in 3
report physical or sexual abuse - women 15 and older*

Our extensive Child Safety Protocols help keep all children safe, and staff and volunteers are trained to recognize and stop abuse and exploitation.

Almost 1 in 6
young women give birth before age 18.*

Adolescent health education and services provide the knowledge and resources teens need to make informed decisions and to stay healthy.

500+ million
female adults
are illiterate.*

Nearly two-thirds of illiterate adults are women. Interventions like tutoring assistance, access to libraries, computer labs and more, help ensure girls learn to read, write and stay in school.

Supporting gender equality

Gender disparities in health, education, economic opportunity and political representation remain frustratingly persistent. In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #5, our holistic programs promote gender equality and strive to empower all women and girls.

Through our programs, Children International works to achieve these goals:

  • End all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere.
Children International promotes the equitable advancement of girls through programs that build healthy environments, expand access to education, and ensure equal opportunities for skill‑building and leadership.
  • Eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.
We create safe spaces in our community centers and in the neighborhoods we serve. Our robust Child Protection Protocols help prevent and respond to abuse. Programs focused on resilience, mentorship, and social‑emotional support empower girls to recognize risks, seek help, and build healthy social networks.
  • Adopt and strengthen sound policies and legislation to promote gender equality and empowerment.
By equipping girls with leadership skills, life‑skills training, and real opportunities to engage in their communities, Children International helps nurture confident young advocates who spark meaningful change toward our world vision of gender equality.
  • Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making.
Leadership workshops, youth councils, and empowerment initiatives give girls significant roles in shaping their own futures and their communities. Through these workshops, girls practice public speaking, take part in projects that elevate their voices and teach them how to lead with confidence.
  • Establish universal access to sexual and reproductive health.
Children International’s adolescent health programs provide reproductive health education, hygiene guidance, STI prevention information, and strengthened access to local care, helping girls make informed decisions and build lifelong healthy habits.

What is child sponsorship?

Child sponsorship connects two people — a sponsor with a generous heart and a child living in poverty. From toddlerhood to young adulthood, our child and youth development program equips kids with crucial life and job skills to break the cycle of poverty. For good.

At Children International, we believe every child deserves the chance to thrive. And with support from caring individuals and philanthropic organizations, young people around the world are unlocking their potential. Together, we empower children and youth to build confidence, shape their futures and drive lasting change in their families and neighborhoods.
