Copán Ruinas Community Center: Honduras

Nestled in the hills of western Honduras, near the Guatemalan border, lies the town of Copán Ruinas. Tourists flock to this rural area to view incredible ancient Mayan ruins. But most visitors don’t see the reality of life in Copán Ruinas, where families are struggling to survive, much as their ancestors did, by farming the land for a meager income.

We’ve been working in Copán Ruinas for 27 years, and we’re proud to be a part of the community. Our small center has been one of the few bright spots in the neighborhood, providing aid for children and families who are among the poorest in Honduras.

But we must face the fact that we are serving children out of a building that is too small, too outdated, structurally compromised and at risk of being condemned if it continues to sink.

We have also reached the maximum number of children we are able to help in Copán Ruinas – even though there are so many more who need our assistance. In fact, there are currently nearly 350 children on the waiting list to be sponsored there.

A new community center in Copán Ruinas will provide improved services to currently enrolled sponsored children, as well as allowing us to expand our reach to even more needy boys and girls.

Community Centers: Building Hope for the Future
Thank you to those donating to our community center campaign! Each center that we build not only provides crucial care for thousands of needy children, but stands as a symbol of our long-term commitment to the community itself.

While gifts of any amount are welcomed, contributors who provide a gift of at least $1,000 toward construction of a community center will receive:

  • Regular updates on the progress of the center
  • A report on the inauguration of services in the new location
  • An open invitation to attend the center’s inauguration or visit anytime
  • Your name, or the name of a loved one, inscribed on a wall in the center for all children and families to see.

Please call our Development Department at 1-800-888-4089 now to donate to our community center campaign.
