On November 8, 2013, 16 million lives were changed forever. Category five Typhoon Haiyan, the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record, tore through the island country, killing thousands and leaving millions homeless. In this desperate time, every government agency, social service and humanitarian organization was needed. Children International’s staff was among them, working with volunteers and partners to help jumpstart the recovery efforts for victims of the horrific storm.
CI staff, adult and youth volunteers in the Philippines aided the efforts to make sure that much-needed relief items, including food and water, got to victims in difficult-to-reach areas. Meanwhile, CI was organizing shipments of medical supplies and wheelchairs, hygiene kits, clothing and hats, diapers and household items.
Footwear is especially important after a severe storm like Haiyan. To help battle injury, illnesses and parasites, Children International – a TOMS Giving Partner – distributed shoes to typhoon victims, including children, whose faces lit up in excitement when they received the new footwear.
Access to clean water is even more vital after a major storm. In the past year, CI and the Planet Water Foundation have deployed four emergency water systems and six AquaTowers in typhoon-affected areas. AquaTowers will remain in place and provide access to potable water for years to come.
These relief projects are ongoing efforts that Children International will continue into the future. Learn more about Children International disaster relief.
