Children International is a nonprofit humanitarian organization working to eradicate poverty around the world. At CI, we believe that every child matters and that it is simply unacceptable that over a billion children live in poverty. The CI approach is to invest in our kids and youth by providing a safe place, a caring team and a path out of poverty through programs in health, education, empowerment and employment. We provide this support for 250,000 children in 13 agencies working in 10 countries around the world.

The work Children International does on behalf of children in poverty is funded primarily through a one-to-one sponsorship model. We are transforming our funding model to dramatically increase the support we provide our kids. Additionally, we are taking our programs from good to great by elevating our people systems and practices worldwide. That’s where you come in.

Position summary

Children International is in need of a talented mid- to senior-level copywriter who can take our marketing and communications materials to the next level. In this role, you will create integrated marketing campaigns, with extra attention to crafting compelling copies that engage and convert. We are looking for someone who will help us expand our digital footprint and drive greater value to the organization through online marketing and branded content.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of producing campaigns and tactics that attract and convert new audiences, increase engagement and drive leads. This position requires a high level of creativity and conceptual thinking, as well as the ability to weave data-driven insights and study outcomes into marketing materials. The successful candidate should have experience managing others writers, delivering creative feedback and working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Experience developing and executing multichannel content strategies would be a plus for someone in this role. Preference will be given to those with a strong copywriting portfolio, bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Familiarity with writing for various audiences, interpreting high-level brand messages, developing messaging strategies and nuancing copy based on audience insights and relevant topics
  • Experience writing a wide range of marketing materials, including but not limited to: websites, emails, digital banners, social media posts, newsletters, direct mail, sponsor acquisition packages, acknowledgement letters, brochures and fundraising appeals
  • Create copy that drives leads, converts new sponsors and increases engagement among existing sponsors
  • Contribute to the development of new ideas and concepts for marketing campaigns, publications and fundraising tactics
  • Utilize workflow management tool to track time spent on projects for both self and direct reports
  • Edit content produced by direct reports and other team members
  • Analyze content marketing metrics and makes changes as needed
  • Use SEO best practices to generate traffic to our site
  • Research, proofread, update and fact-check materials
  • Provide positive leadership to other writers and the creative team
  • Collaborate closely with Audience Marketing, Marketing Operations, Philanthropy, IT and other departments
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Personal Characteristics & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or related field
  • Must have 5-10 years professional copywriting experience, preferably including some management experience
  • Knowledge of digital marketing tactics, including SEO, email marketing and web analytics
  • Initiative and ability to work with a variety of deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Requires excellent judgment in keeping on top of multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Possess a creative and adaptable approach to writing
  • Conscientious about accuracy and attention to detail
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills
