By the Numbers: Youth (Un)Employment: Whether you live in Kolkata, L.A. or somewhere in between, youth (un)employment has a major impact on young lives. Take a look at the problem by the numbers, and learn why you should act now to help teens around the corner and your sponsored kids around the globe.
The problem: 74.5 million youth are unemployed. That's 2.7 youth for every 1 adult. 25% of youth are neither employeed, in education or in training.
Why it matters: Youth unemployment can affect wages, health and job satisfaction for 20 years. 8 in 10 youth are informally employed with unstable work, poor working conditions, low and irregular pay and no safety net. Nearly 2/3 of youth in the developing world aren’t meeting their income potential. And 1/2 of the developing world is trapped in informal employment.
How you help: Your support means 160,000 youth are eligible to participate in Children International’s Career Readiness Program. About 17,025 scholarships have been given for education and vocational training, and 96% of youth in CI’s Into Employment® program graduated from their training program.
The results? Great jobs like police officer, jewelry maker, restaurant server, nurse, welder, chef.
