Youth Win the Gold for their Green Projects at the United Nations!

Two Children International teen leaders win Youth Achievement Awards for cleaning up their communities.

New York, NY – For two teens sponsored through Children International, overcoming poverty’s hurdles is an Olympic feat by itself. Leading their community in environmental change wins them the gold medal!

The award is given to high school students ages 16-18 who have made significant contributions to humanitarian goals. Children International nominated Jiyaul Piyada from India and Lara Villanueva from the Philippines, after they led re-forestation and clean-up campaigns in their communities.

As winners, the youth will receive their awards at a special ceremony at the United Nations. They will meet Olympic medalists speaking at the event. Winners will also be invited to apply to participate in the regular United Nations Youth Assembly.

Jim Cook, Children International President and CEO said, “I am proud of our youth. They worked very hard to make a difference in their communities, and they richly deserve this special recognition.”

About the Youth Assembly:
The annual Youth Assembly at the United Nations, now in its fifth year, is a gathering of hundreds of young people from around the world who seek practical ways to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Assembly has grown to include nearly 1,000 young people, as well as specialized keynote speakers and workshop leaders, and is now both at the United Nations and at Pace University (for its attendant Leadership Seminar series). Each year, it provides avenues for students and young professionals, 18-26 years old, to learn about and become involved with programs that address global and local issues related to the MDGs, to network among the large international delegation in attendance, and to become engaged and empowered to take leadership roles in their own communities throughout the world.
