Youth Sponsored by Children International to Carry Out Projects

Youth use funds to help orphans.

The Youth Board, consisting of 32 young representatives of the communities sponsored by Children International [in the Dominican Republic], intends to conduct a series of activities with the special donation of $20,000 that they will receive from Children International for community and youth projects.

Children International has several Youth Committees who, after a consultation process, decided which activities to carry out using the money they will receive from the charitable institution.

Among the main activities selected by the Youth Board are visits to orphanages and nursing homes. The objective of these visits will be to strengthen the values of solidarity, respect, trust and sharing.

"With this project we would be giving aid to an orphanage and a nursing home, and at the same time developing recreational activities, which will enable us to share with others who feel socially excluded," said Willy Olmos, sponsored youth from the Bayaguana community.

Another activity to take place during 2008 will be a Food and Culture Fair in which the communities can show off aspects of their daily lives; this will allow them to highlight all the positive values they possess.

Included in their business plan is a Campaign for the Prevention of Child Abuse which will give communities an opportunity to reflect on the importance of preventing child abuse and emphasize the proper treatment of children.

Finally, other activities will include Educational Field Trips.

"We thought about walking through the neighborhoods, making posters and brochures and giving talks about prevention in our communities. But the activity I like the most out of all of those we are doing is the Educational Field Trips, because we all know that in our country there are places that are naturally rich in cultural identity.  At the end of the trip, we will practice and spread the word about everything we learned,” remarked Yoquenia Marrero, sponsored youth from the Los Tres Brazos community and member of the Youth Board.
