Today’s Readers, Tomorrow’s Leaders

Book distribution benefits impoverished children in India.

Calcutta, INDIA – Children International – Sahay opens a new chapter for educating children in Calcutta.

The Kansas City-based child sponsorship organization’s Product Donations Program has distributed 18,000 books, valued at $450,210, that will be donated to area schools and colleges. From that donation, 800 of the books will be donated to the Government College of Arts and Crafts. The textbooks are high quality books and mainly science, geography,
history, health, nutrition, music, mathematics, art and craft, and would serve as reference books for the students and aid them in their academic curriculum.

The donation supports literacy and learning in the community, helps students improve academically through reading and widening their horizon by giving them access to quality books on a wide range of subjects.

The Product Donations Program was developed as a supplementary program to further strengthen its mission of helping needy children, their families and their communities. Under this program, Children International has supported the housing, health and education programs of operating agencies and helped improve library services of public schools, community reading centers and public health centers.

Children International President and CEO Jim Cook, who was present at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta for the donation ceremony, says, “Children in Calcutta know that education and literacy are vital to lifting children out of poverty. This donation is only the beginning of brighter futures for sponsored children in Calcutta.”
