| HISTORY |
When it was founded in 1936, our organization, then known as Holy Land Christian Mission, focused primarily on healing crippled children and providing outreach to widows and orphans in the Holy Land. But as the world changed, and poverty became more prevalent, we expanded our mission to raise support for the world's poorest children by creating a personal and lasting connection between one needy child and one compassionate sponsor. |
These efforts were started in 1980 when we launched our first projects in India, the Philippines and Guatemala. By the end of that year, more than 2,300 children were benefiting from sponsorship.
Programs were next added in Chile, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Ecuador, and by the end of the 80s, some 134,000 poor children were benefiting from reliable access to medical care, educational support and material aid. Then, in 1994, we opened up sponsorship to disadvantaged children in the United States. |
Today, Children International continues to expand this web of hope, adding programs in Mexico and Zambia in 2005, and now reaching more than 335,000 children…and counting. |
