| Los Tres Brazos Community Center: Dominican Republic |
Children International has worked in the Dominican Republic for almost 30 years, and in the community of Los Tres Brazos for nearly 20 years. The area is called Los Tres Brazos (The Three
Arms) because three branches of the Ozama River encircle it. It is one of the most deprived areas of the city. With nowhere else to go, squatters stack their houses on the banks of the river and under bridges.
The river is contaminated and floods often, which makes parasitic infection a common problem for residents. Crime, gangs, hunger and unemployment have left the community crippled and hurting. Many people work informally selling at the markets, on the streets or by picking up manual labor jobs wherever they can. When there isn’t work, they go hungry.
In early 2009, our agency in the Dominican Republic purchased a piece of land to build a new center in Los Tres Brazos. The location of the land is very safe and is easily accessible to both current and future sponsored children and families. We are hoping to build a two-story building totaling 800 square meters that will include a medical and dental clinic, pharmacy, library, youth center, computer lab and playground.

 |
Currently, we have 1,468 sponsored children and 568 children on the waiting list in Los Tres Brazos. We intend to enroll 3,500 additional children in this community in the next three to six years, which would bring the total number of children served in the community to over 5,000.
 |
Updating the agency’s infrastructure by building a new center in Los Tres Brazos will allow us to respond to the need for more and better services for our sponsored children. Our plan is to construct and equip the new center so that it can serve children in an organized, spacious and dynamic space with quality programs and services.
Ultimately, it is our hope that the new center will serve as a catalyst to empower the community to improve their economic situation and work together to bring positive change into their lives.

Community Centers: Building Hope for the Future
Thank you for donating to our community center campaign! Each center that we build not only provides crucial care for 5,000 needy children but stands as a symbol of our long-term
commitment to the community itself.
Please note that 100 percent of your donation will be used exclusively for community center construction.
While gifts of any amount are welcomed, contributors who provide a gift of at least $1,000 toward construction of a community center will receive:
- regular updates on the progress of the center
- a report on the inauguration of services in this new location
- an open invitation to attend the center’s inauguration or visit anytime
- your name, or the name of a loved one, will be inscribed on a wall in
the center for all children and families to see.
