Start a Friends Group: Share the Joy!

We are thrilled that you want to start a Friends Group of your own! This is an exciting way to share your sponsorship experience, and help Children International provide hope to more children. Forming a Friends Group is easy and fun! Below are some suggestions to help make your group successful.

For your first meeting
  • Contact people who are already sponsors and those you think would enjoy sponsorship.
  • Invite them to a meeting or an event at your home, school, club or church.
  • Call, email or send invitations announcing your event.

  • Your first Friends meeting

  • Present a program about children living in poverty. You can tailor your presentation to include a speech, video, PowerPoint presentation, brochures and testimonials. These items are available online for you to download.
  • Include photos, letters and family records from your sponsored child/children to personalize your presentation.
  • Encourage your audience to sponsor a child by completing and mailing in the Sponsorship Brochure or visiting www.children.org.
  • Urge your friends to start a web-based Lift One Project.
  • Advise new sponsors to write their child by logging into their personal MyAccount at www.children.org.
  • Set a date for your Group’s next meeting.
  • Don’t forget to thank your friends for coming!
  • Your second Friends meeting

  • Choose a group leader. The leader will facilitate the Friends meetings.
  • Decide on your fundraising goal. Identify the group’s interests and suggest potential fundraising goals.
  • Brainstorm fundraising ideas. Discuss what events or activities will help you reach your goals and have fun at the same time. For example, host a dinner, plan an auction or plan a gala. Be sure to consider the size of your Friends Group and its interests and talents when deciding what type of event to hold.
  • Form planning committees. Divide the responsibilities among each committee for your fundraising event.
Depending on the size of your event, you might want to set up the following committees: Finance and Budget, Volunteer Coordinator, Promotions and Publicity, Venue/Decorations Coordinator, Entertainment, Refreshments, Ticket Sales and Registration.
  • Establish a date and determine your budget for the event.
  • Determine how you will publicize your fundraising event.
  • Set the date for your next meeting.
  • Thank your friends for their ideas and involvement.

  • You will want to have several meetings to plan your event.

Hold your event. And don’t forget to have fun!

Collect the funds. Ensure that funds collected at your fundraiser event are made out to Children International, and identify your group name and your specified project.

    After the big event…
  • Mail the checks within 30 days to Children International - Development, 2000 East Red Bridge Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
  • Thank your Friends Group for their hard work!
  • Give yourself a pat on the back for helping build a brighter future for impoverished children!
